Indian Nuclear Deal to Move Forward After All
One of the areas where President Bush's historical legacy should be in no doubt, and will be clearly positive, is with the civilian nuclear deal with India. After months (actually over a year) of problems within India, Prime Minister Manomahn Singh took a political gamble and secured support from a former opposition party so that he could dump obstructionist Communists out of his Pariamentary coalition. The Communists had refused to go along with the nuclear deal with the US, but now he has the necessary support.
This is good for so many reasons. I understand the arguments about this representing American hypocirsy with regard to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation treaty, but the benefit of helping a possible significant Asian ally (not to mention bounties of contracts and related jobs) will be considered one of the shrewdest geopolitical moves since Nixon and Kissinger went to China.
