Asian Values
A great piece that describes differing perceptions of human rights as conceived by the West in general and Asia. This is another faultline to consider as western powers continues to discuss "humanitarian" interventions in places like Burma. It also raises questions about the universality of values, especially those of the post- Enlightenment West.
Though this author seems to conclude that western values may well over time emerge triumphant (a constant theme of western thought even when on the defense), I am not so sure. Western economics, particularly American capitalism, is being taken up by nations everywhere (though modified to fit within different cultures). Human rights, though, is still a controversial subject as it threatens the current stability (and in many cases the viability) of numerous states.
