Iranian Provocation in the Gulf

In the wake of all the Presidential politics, not very many people are probably aware that we nearly fired on several Iranian speed boats in the Persian Gulf.  This would have been an incident that could have blown up very large, especially considering the relative stabilization of Iraq, the improving of Turkish-American relations, and the serious distraction of of destabilized Pakistan in the wake of Benazir Bhutto's assasination.  Did we provoke this incident or make a mountain out of a molehill?  Are there Iranian hardliners looking to create a conflict?  What does this mean for President Bush as he embarks on the longest tour of the Middle East of his Presidency.  What would it mean for the Presidential campaign?

Also, a good article by Walter Russell Meade of the CFR on this issue as well and how close it really was as a potential for war.

Lots of questions...
