Parallels Between India and Iraq

Interesting comparative piece that compares and contrasts the creation of India and Pakistan in 1947 (as part of the general British withdrawal from their colonial empire).  While acknowledging the similarities are far from exact, it does raise moral questions about what will happen after an eventual American withdrawal from Iraq provided a political compromise is not found that can pacify the contending parties.  My suspicion is that Iraq will become a bloody mess and I would not be surprised if any number of foreign powers manipulate the ensuing strife top gain advantages or defend perceptions of interest.  A tragedy is not foreordained, but it is looking ever more likely even in the wake of the relatively successful military efforts of Gen. Petraeus and the “Surge.”  Let us all hope, Republicans and Democrats, that we can avoid a moral stain on us.  If we fail at this, I do worry about the future of morality in foreign policy.  I have said many times, woe to the world if America “stops caring.”  If Iraq pushes us there, its worse than any pundit is saying.
