Saving Darfur

Opinion piece from former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson focusing on the recent positive movement made by the UN on providing security in Darfur .  Clearly, the UN peacekeeping moves are a positive development, but it also appears that much of the initial flexibility that the peacekeepers would have in dealing with facts on the ground has been diluted.  I hope this isn’t another Bosnia where UN peacekeepers become trapped between two warring sides, are unable to stop any killing, and watch atrocities unfold under their noses.  That would be a further blow to the institutions prestige and while I don’t think the UN is even half of what it purports itself to be, it would be sad for it decline even further.  For the moment, however, some rays of hope are visible.
