Bush Getting Tough on the Border
In the wake of the immigration bill collapse, President Bush is looking to reestablish his bona fides with the conservative base. His recent proposals about “getting tough” on the border are a good start if followed through. While we do need comprehensive immigration reform, it has been obvious for some time that many Americans do not trust the government to the job of securing its borders. Before we can talk about dealing with new immigrant, and certainly before talking about what to do with those who have entered illegally in the past, we have to get a grip on the border itself. If not, no one will ever trust the government again on this issue.
