China News
Multiple pieces on China .
First, a piece examining the prospects for expanding relations between the French and Chinese under new French Prime Minister Nicolas Sarkozy.
Second, an in-depth look at how Hu Jintao has consolidated his grip on power over the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). So far, he looks like he has really mastered this. He knows he needs the military so he keeps giving them more influence while showing himself constantly interested in their actions. Now even top military brass are comparing some of his dictums to Mao and Deng Xiaoping. Not too bad for someone who practically no military experience previously.
Finally, more on China and India , especially an announced joint-terrorism training expected to commence in October. Again, China ’s foreign policy for the most part is very sophisticated. While earlier posts have examined the complexity of the Sino-Indian relationship, China is obviously using the threwat of terrorism as a way to partially ingratiate themselves with their potential rival. I am sure part of this is also an effort to be sure actions like our recent civilian nuclear deal with India doesn’t lead the Indians to becoming a “pawn” in an American attempt to encircle them. Again, smart diplomacy, we need to keep engaging with China beyond the simplicity of currency reevaluations and tariffs. They are proving to be one of the most adept political actors in the world. A great asset since they already have the world’s largest economic market.
