Did Fred Miss the Boat?
From ABC’s the Note, this piece (which goes on to other stories) intimates that Fred Thompson may have missed his moment. By focusing on “staff turmoil” and the $3 million raised, it indicates he is having serious problems. I don’t think so. So far he has been “Testing the Water” an actual FEC designation. His campaign is not official and technically hasn’t raised any money for the real campaign yet, only money to see if he should jump in. Also, every campaign has internal issues that need to be addressed, I think its better that these issues are being raised while he is still unofficial than after he gets in. Maybe, the media is right and this is all representative of major problems that will derail him early on, but it seems awful premature to me. Let’s see what July numbers look like (he hasn’t had to report those yet) and let’s see what happens when he announces and starts putting flesh on the bones of his policies. Remember, as Eyeon08 helpfully shows, Romney and Giuliani have been running for a long time, is it surprising they’re raising money? Expectations might be a bit too high, but I think Thompson fits the profile appropriately and these hiccups can be ironed out early in his run.
