Opposing Our "Containment"
From the Jerusalem Post, reports indicate Russia might be getting ready to sell Iran 250 advanced long range fighters. The article speculates this could be the Russian effort to match recent reports that the US will be sending $20 billion worth of military equipment to Saudi Arabia as part of an effort to “contain” Iran . An arms race in the Middle East is an increasing possibility as locals fight among themselves over religion (Sunni vs. Shiite), culture (Arab vs. Kurd vs. Turk vs. Persian), and prominence. This combined with external actors getting in on the game to buck up spheres of influence and compete with another (ie, the US and Russia ) means the Middle East will remain a powder keg for a long time to come.
