Deal on Nuclear Technology with India and a Look at India and China's Relationship
Here is the statement of Secretary of State Rice on the completion of civil nuclear negotiations with India this past Friday, the 27th. This deal is certainly historic as it will allow a rapidly growing economy (and the world’s largest democracy by population) to gain access to advanced American nuclear technology for civilian purposes. Many oppose the deal since India is not a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and claim that our cooperation with them when contrasted to our approach with Iran illustrates hypocrisy. It is important to note that we are reserving the right to discontinue collaboration if the Indians set off another nuclear weapons test like they did in 1998. Also, I would say one should look at the nature of the regime seeking this power. India is largely a status quo power, not a revolutionary power like Iran . Further, I would say as I have mentioned before, the genie is out of the bottle on nuclear power, we should help certain countries and contain others. Consistency is great to aspire to, but this isn’t a perfect world. You help your friends and either contain or confront your adversaries. Today, India is most definitely a friend.
