Market Oriented, Comprehensive Healthcare May Be Needed...

Good piece from the Governor of Tennessee about a new health care proposal they are working on.  Yes he is a Democrat, but it appears Republicans were supportive of the basic concept which is a portable health insurance plan that people can take from job to job without losing coverage, going to COBRA, or being stuck somewhere they hate.  I admit I don’t know the funding details and as always, the devil is in the details.  However, Republicans need to deal seriously with healthcare or the Democrat advantage on that issue will be a continuing wedge to use against our candidates when competing for blue collar and middle class votes.  The President has talked about revamping the tax code so that individuals can buy their own policies without being beholden to their employer.  This too is an interesting perspective.  We do need to “universalize” health care, the question is how is this accomplished.  If its Big Brother funding everything and dispensing the care, we have a big, big problem.  If it’s a mandate like car insurance, we may be moving in the right direction (I know, some props due Mitt Romney for his plans in Massachusetts ).  This may not sit well with libertarians, but the polls don’t lie.  People are restless on this issue and are demanding something being done.  If we aren’t proactive, the Dems will be to our everlasting electoral discomfort.  They can't define the solution, if they do, we could be looking at a seriously long wilderness period.  Free market solutions, mandate-lite policies, HSAs, prevention programs, these should all be in the mix.
